Happy World Water Day!

March 22, 2010

Remember that extra five minutes you decided to spend in the shower today? That water could have been saved and conserved for a better cause! Today, March 22, is World Water Day. It was established in 1992 by the United Nations and focused on the world’s water crisis and offers solutions to it. Today, there are events planned in Washington D.C and around the world to raise awareness.

The Huffington Post listed these shocking statistics:

1. Over half of the world’s illnesses are caused by unsafe water.

2.  1 billion people don’t have access to clean drinking water.

3. It we do nothing, that number could be as high as 1.8 billion by the year 2025.

The Huffington Post also named several organizations that are attempting to reverse this trend:

1. charity: water – People in London or New York can volunteer to move quipment, take pictures, and raise money.

2. The Water Project – contribute to projects in Kenya, Sudan, India, and Haiti. You can also create your own personal fundraising page to raise money for a specific cause.

3. Give Clean Water – an effort to bring clean water to Fiji islands. They’ve installed hundreds of water filters in the country. Did you know that donating $100 could give a family clean water for life?

National Geographic has a special April issue dedicated to water which will be on newsstands next week. In it, they are displaying a wide variety of beautiful H20 photographs.
