Eco-Friendly House Pets

April 6, 2010

You consider your pesky pets members of your family, right? Well, why not invite them to join in your newfound sense of “going green”? There are endless opportunities to conserve your resources while still giving your house animal all the love and care they need. Today ZooToo.com posted an article on their website about how to go green with your pet at home. They did this in light of the annual Global Pet Expo that happened in Orlando, Florida, just recently. The article names a few companies, including ‘The Good Dog Company’ as suppliers of products such as leashes, collars, harnesses and toys with organic cotton and sustainable, natural hemp.

Planet Green is another website that hosts tips online for keeping your pet “green” and healthy. An article titled “How to go Green: Pets” by Jasmin Malik Chua in New Jersey made an extensive tip list, including:

1. Adopt from a shelter – according to “Planet Green”, 70,000 puppies and kittens are born in the United States every day. Save an animal’s life and give them a good home by taking them out of the pound! Certain breeds of pets become popular when the latest celebrity is seen with one, but fads fade – your special pet is with you its whole life! make sure you pick one for the right reaasons.

2. Spay or neuter your pet – this obviously prevents the birth of unwanted animals, but it can also help your cats or dogs live longer! Your pets will be healthier and will eliminate the possibility of uterine, ovarian, and testicular cancer, and decrease the incidence of prostate disease.

3. Swap out the junk food -Natural and organic pet foods use meats that are raised without added drugs or hormones, minimally processed, and preserved with natural substances. According to “Planet Green”, “Certified-organic pet foods must meet strict USDA standards that spell out how ingredients are produced and processed, which means no pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, artificial preservatives, artificial ingredients or genetically engineered ingredients”.

4. Clean up their poop – use biodegradable poop bags for the puppies and eco-friendly cat litter for the kitties!
